Gardening

I am thrilled to experience the amazing seasonal change from winter to spring at our house this year. With help from my mom, I got a great start to the spring clean-up in the yard about a month ago. Now, I have been witnessing daily the rebirth of my perennials and trees. It is so much fun!

This past weekend I was able to get all of my vegetables planted except the pepper and tomato plants which were finished today. I went practical with the selection this year after the unfortunate loss of some and surpluses of others (jalapeƱo peppers). I have perennial herbs returning - oregano, parsley and lemon balm (I think). I planted pumpkins from seed after clearing out some space at the top of my garden (fingers crossed on those!). I started cucumber and zucchini from seeds about a month ago in the house and transplanted those seedlings. So far, every single one of them is still alive ... 3 days and counting! I'll have a great crop if they continue to thrive. Tomatoes (regular and cherry) and pepper (green) were purchased grown from the store.

This past weekend I also did a few transplants. I have an area at the side of the yard that is particularly steep and has two trees and several raspberry bushes growing. Last year I painstakingly weeded the area so I could actually pick the raspberries. This year I weeded (again) and have transplanted 3 additional raspberry plants. I think the previous homeowners were fanatical for raspberries. I am finding them in all of their flower beds and throughout the property. So far these transplants are thriving. Still many more to relocate.

Highlights from my gardening to-do list
1. Cut the grass which has grown into a hayfield in the back. It took off like nobody's business when I was away and now it has just been too rainy and wet to get it cut.
2. Completely remove the root of the last shrub at the front of the house and begin to replant the garden here so that I have self-sufficient perennials that I gorgeous.
3. Continue to clear the overgrown weeds out front and replace with wildflowers.
4. Lay out mulch (everywhere...it will be a lot).
5. Weed the backyard patio area and seed with grass.
6. Construct a bonfire pit.
7. Strategically place watering/soaker hoses and sprinklers so that my hard work isn't doomed for failure like last year. :)
